ISABELLA

“Hi Todd, is Sebastian here?” I asked, giving him my best innocent look.

“No, we haven’t seen him these last few days,” Todd answered.

“Well, if he comes in can you tell him that Isabella is looking for him? I have something important to talk to him about.”

“Um, okay . . . Are you sure you don’t want to talk to Roger? That’s usually who your family works with.”

“My family? No, this has nothing to do with my family.”

Where could the boy be? How am I supposed to get back together with him if I can’t find him? Boys!

“Ah, hang on, I just remembered,” Todd added. “I think Sebastian’s mother passed away this week. I don’t know if he’ll be coming back.”

“Oh, he’ll be coming back,” said a lady who slapped some papers on the desk. “I need these back by two. Make sure they’re back on my desk by then.”

“Wait, what do you mean he’ll be coming back?” I asked.

“Roger was raving about how he already has enough mouths to feed and he’s going to have to add one more. That if it wasn’t his nephew, he’d just throw the urchin to the street. Then he closed his door, so I didn’t get to hear anything more.”

“Well, that doesn’t mean anything about Sebastian.”

“Of course it does.”

“Why?”

“You do know Roger is his uncle, right? Sebastian’s dad got this job because of him. This was ages ago, though. I don’t remember all the details, but I do remember for a whole month that Cassie would come into work every day with a fresh lunch. She would give Roger a back massage and always talk about Frank and how much she loved him, and how they must take care of her sister’s family. It became impossible for us to not hear all about it. Roger agreed to take him on in the end. But boy, did he work him hard. There was no mercy for Frank.” She looked down at her watch. “Oh no, he’s coming back soon! I need to go. Todd, make sure you give those papers back to me by two o’clock.”

“I will,” Todd said, shuffling papers around on his desk.

As soon as the woman left, I asked Todd, “Who was that?” She was intriguing and had a loose mouth; I liked her.

“Oh, that’s Rosalyn. She’s Roger’s secretary. She’s been here forever, way before my time. If anything, she’s the one who really runs the office.”

“I’ve never seen her before.”

“That’s because she’s always anywhere else but working at her desk. I’m usually the one that does the work.”

Oh really? Now Rosalyn was someone worth getting to know.
